In case you haven't yet heard of the “SAVE” Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility”), this legislation, under consideration at the federal level, would require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in all federal elections. It would also require that all states clean their respective voter rolls and remove all non-citizens.
This bill passed the House of Representatives last summer with all Republicans and five Democrats voting in favor. The Senate never did anything with the bill, so it died.
This year, the U.S. House in the new 119th Congress has re-introduced the legislation under the same name. The bill was referred to the House Committee on House Administration, and PIME has it on good authority that the bill will be discussed in committee this Monday (March 31) and hopefully brought to the floor for a vote by the end of the week.
If you don’t think there are non-citizens voting in our elections, think again. We have all heard of the Chinese citizen who voted in Ann Arbor last November, but what many don't know is the only reason they found out was because the Chinese citizen returned to the polling station and told them!
If he had not told them, officials in our state would still have had no idea. How many other non-citizens have voted in our elections without our knowledge? And this is only the most recent example. Chip Roy, the sponsor of the SAVE act, provides a host of other examples in the attached “SAVE Act Myth vs. Fact” file.
As an example, the report states, "There is ample evidence of non-US citizens registering to vote. One 2014 study of the 2008 and 2010 elections found that non-citizens voted and likely impacted the outcome in several races. Virginia removed 1,481 voter registrations for “non-citizen status.” In 2014, North Carolina conducted a study that found over 1,400 registered voters on its rolls appeared to be non-citizens. Numerous states and local jurisdictions are actively seeking to register non-citizens in their elections. One illegal ballot cast is one too many and can impact the outcome of tight elections."
How many would be found in Michigan if our elections officials actually looked?
